Community Service Ideas for Class

Community Service Activities for Elementary School Children

This is a practice exercise for course EDM 510.  For purposes of this exercise, we will pretend that the other members of my group are parents of students in my classroom.  I am inviting you, as parents, to contribute ideas for community service activities for my 5th grade class.  Once we have a list of ideas, the class will vote on which community service activity we will take on as a class for this semester.

One idea is for the students to gather at the Prodisee Pantry in Spanish Fort on the first Wednesday evening of each month from 5-7 PM to prepare food boxes for families in need.

  1. A community service idea would to be for students to bring in shoe boxes to fill with items such as socks, toothpaste, deodorant...etc and deliver them to a local shelter.

    1. That would be a great idea. We could start collecting supplies now so that we have a large quantity of supplies by the end of the school year. We could do this project for our end of year community service project.

  3. One great community service idea is to deliver baked goods to our local fire departments and police stations. Saying thank you to our service men and women is not done often enough in our country. In our society, this can teach our young children that these people are there to protect us not harm us. It also, shows them they are human just as much as we are.

    1. I love the idea of baking for these important members of our community! We are working on measurements and fractions now, so we could incorporate these recipes into our math lessons.

  4. Another great way for students to be involved in helping their community, is to set up a beach clean up date. Students can work together to clean up our shore lines and witness first hand the effects of garbage on our coasts.

    1. I think that would be a great end of year project! We will schedule a day in May before school gets out to take on this activity.

  5. Collecting nonperishable food items is often done during various holidays, such as Thanksgiving and Christmas. I think having the children collect can goods and other nonperishable food items during the year when there is not a particular holiday would teach them that there are people in need ALL year around. Many children may not realize that people who are in need are not limited to just holiday seasons. Plus donating these items to a local shelter or food pantry would be very beneficial for the location while teaching a valuable lesson to the 5th graders.
